Scope and Contents

The RIT Student Court records consist of copies of the Constitution, administrative documents, and court cases during 1965-1972. The records document changes that evolved in the judicial process and reflected in a resolution of procedural changes and an updated Constitution.

Administrative documents include proposed objectives for 1972-1973, description of the Legal Advisory Board and Court Examiner, and an explanation of the Judicial Conference.

Biographical / Historical

In 1965, the Student Court was the judiciary of the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Student Association. The judicial bodies of all other recognized student organizations and councils were subordinate to the Student Court. It had the power to summon, to adjudicate, and to impose penalties as provided in the bylaws. A Consititution was developed and approved by the Policy Committee. In 1972, the Constitution was updated to reflect necessary changes. A Legal Advisory Board was formed to provide personal assistance to those who came before the Court. The Board worked independently of the Court and served the requests of the client. The Board was made up of students, faculty and administration.

By 1973, the student judicial system underwent a major revision. A Steering Committee was formed on behalf of the Policy Council. The Office of Student Affairs conducted a series of weekly seminars to discuss judicial processes in student discipline cases at RIT. At that time, a Judicial Coordinator was appointed to oversee all of the activities of the judicial system.
