Scope and Contents

The Isaiah Thomas Award in Publishing collection includes information on the award's recipients. There is a file on each recipient that contains clippings on the individual and their selection, as well as memorabilia from the award ceremony. For instance, many of the files contain copies of the ceremony's program, as well as a keepsake copy of some of the recipients acceptance speech. (1980, 1982-1983, 2001 and 2005, 2010 on DVD) The 1980, 1982-83, 2001 award winner's speeches are available in pdf format and can be requested from the RIT Archive Collections.

There are also photographs of the 2012 Special Award event featuring recipient Frank Romano,(on DVD) and administrative records for the award dating from 2000-2006. (on DVD) and a powerpoint presentation of Isaiah Thomas at the Cary Collection (on DVD).

Biographical / Historical

The Isaiah Thomas Award in Publishing is awarded annually by the Rochester Institute of Technology's (RIT) School of Print Media to an individual in honor of his or her contributions to the newspaper industry. According to the award's website, recipients must meet have demonstrated the following criteria during his or her career:

  • Distinguished him or herself through leadership, innovation, research, or other significant contributions to the industry
  • Demonstrated career achievements that would qualify him or her as a role model for students pursuing careers in the fields of printing, publishing, and media
  • Exhibited some element of risk-taking in communicating his or her message.
  • Past Isaiah Thomas Award in Publishing Recipients (current as of 2016)
