The RIT Office of Minority Student Affairs records consists of correspondence, fliers, and a clipping related to the office and its activities. The correspondence consists primarily of memorandums that discuss administrative matters such as the hiring of new personnel and a report submitted by the office to the university's president in 1984. There is also a flier for a videoconference titled "Campus Response to Racial Harassment and Intimidation" and calendar of events from Black History Month in 1993. Finally, the collection includes a clipping on Nancy Padila, a former Coordinator of Minority Student Programs at the Institute who was elected to the Rochester City Council in 1989.

Biographical / Historical

The Rochester Institute of Technology's (RIT) Office of Minority Affairs was established in 1982 under the direction of Fred W. Smith, secretary to the Institute. The number of students from minority populations attending the Institute had been gradually growing . The school's administration hoped that by increasing its number of services, programs, and aid provided to minority students, the Institute could encourage more minority students to attend RIT. Over the years, the office sponsored various events such as a Black History Month celebration, Hispanic Heritage Month, and orientation activities for campus freshmen.
