Biographical / Historical
Around 1970, the Rochester Institute of Technology's (RIT) administration created the Division of Instructional Development and Planning. One of the units under this office was the Division of Instructional Research and Development; this department was later named the Office of Instructional Development (ID). According to one brochure, the purpose of the office was to "search out and implement ways of improving the overall process of instruction at RIT...through cooperative planning, design, implementation, and evaluation of a variety of learning systems appropriate to the Institute." Led by Richard Zakia, the office oversaw several other departments including the Media Design Center (later named the Media Production Center), Instructional Television Center, Instructional Resource Laboratory, and Research Center. As of 2011, the types of services rendered by the Office of Instructional Development were provided by the ETC Production Services department.
