Biographical / Historical
The John Wiley Jones Symposium was presented by the Rochester Institute of Technology's (RIT) College of Science and funded by Jones Chemicals. In 1974, John Wiley Jones, a proponent of scientific education and a longtime supporter of RIT, started the symposium as a way to bring eminent scientists to the university. The symposium featured classes, workshops, and lectures that were open to RIT faculty and staff. The first symposium, "Management of Chemicals Released into the Environment," featured Dr. F. Sherwood Rowland, a future Nobel Prize in Chemistry laureate. The program was open to the public and included two days of lectures and discussions.
As previously mentioned, John Wiley Jones was a proponent of scientific education. He established Jones Chemicals in 1929, building the company from the ground up. Although the company produced many different types of chemicals, they are predominantly known for their water treatment products and chemical transportation services.
As of 2011, the John Wiley Jones Distinguished Lecture Series was still sponsored by the College of Science annually.
