Collection Scope and Content Note

From the Collection:

This collection contains the personal, artistic, entrepreneurial, and teaching records of the sculptor Albert Paley, as well as records of the artist Frances Welles Paley. Materials include business and project records, correspondence, photographs and negatives, sketchbooks, realia, process work, travel and lecture notes, exhibition plans, studio administration documentation, videos, awards, publications, information on professional associations and the work and exhibitions of colleagues, and civic project records. Most material is physical and paper-based, but some collection materials are born-digital as part of the Paley Studios database and server.

The collection is arranged into five series, with multiple subseries within. An overview can be found in the System of Arrangement note, and details for series-specific arrangement can be found in notes for each series.

Historical note

Shop Binders were originally created by and stored in the metal shop of Paley Studios. This documentation was for use in the shop and by shop staff, and was kept in three-ring binders with detailed labels on the spine. Within each binder there may have been folders for specific aspects of more complex projects. The shop binders very often contain photographs of project sites and works in progress, vendor information, site visit and planning notes, billing, supply lists, manuals, and correspondence relevant the the creation of works.
